Maynard Marks recently welcomed two students from Lynfield College for a work experience day with our team.
Akshaya and Sherlyn, who are in the process of deciding what they want to study at university, joined us to explore the different career pathways the property and building industry has to offer.
The students started their day accompanying one of our Building Surveyors, Nadia Draht, on a site visit to a mixed-use building, shadowing her as she undertook construction observations.
For the afternoon, Akshaya and Sherlyn enjoyed a session with one of our Architectural Designers, Jojo Yanez, who demonstrated how best to use SketchUp and Archicad, presenting a range of building details and allowing them to create their own models in the programme. Jojo also offered advice on the subjects he has found most useful during his career and showed them examples of New Zealand building code guides and material samples.
We caught up with the students at the end of their work experience day to unpack what they enjoyed learning about the most. Both Akshaya and Sherlyn commented that the site visit was incredibly valuable, and it was interesting to see a tangible example of how different building components and structures connect. They were also both excited to work with architectural software and understand how the exercises they complete in school apply in a working environment.
This initiative, which followed a successful experience day with Lynfield College last year, reflects our ongoing commitment to nurturing talent and supporting a sustainable industry.
