Following an extended closure caused by building performance and compliance issues, this central Auckland Girls secondary school required clear, structured project management to safely return its gymnasium back to use, within a live school environment.
The project:
Maynard Marks were engaged to provide project management including contract administration services for the remediation and refurbishment of the Upper Gym, at Auckland Girls Grammar School. The scope included structural and seismic strengthening, recladding, roofing replacement, and extensive internal upgrades across two levels.
This project required very careful coordination, due to the live school environment. In addition, we needed to ensure sensitivity to heritage elements, and proactive management of adjacent facilities impacted during construction.
Our design and delivery approach was responsive and adaptable and strongly influenced by existing site conditions. This meant that with staged investigations, and as works progressed and site conditions uncovered, the project design and scope were further refined. The underlying principle was always to ensure the safety and long-term performance of the gym building.

The experienced team members dedicated to this project provided practical, hands-on project management, supported by clear governance, structured reporting and regular project control and site meetings. Our close proximity to site was a bonus that meant we could easily and quickly be on site, as and when needed.
We worked collaboratively with the wider project team to manage change, resolve emerging challenges and to maintain programme and cost certainty. Sustainable outcomes were prioritised, through embedding waste diversion principles early on, therefore reducing landfill and supporting responsible construction practices.
The project was delivered successfully, enabling the safe reopening of the gymnasium and the return of an important learning and activity space for students within the school community.
