Designing a durable, future‑ready school hall for coastal conditions

Northland

Return to all projects

This Northland primary school had experienced weather damage of its school hall and required a robust architectural response to restore functionality, address weathertightness issues and deliver a long-term solution suitable for community use, in a coastal environment.

The project:

We were engaged to provide architectural design services for the remediation and upgrade of Parua Bay School's hall.

Constructed in the early 2000s, the hall had been experiencing water ingress after a severe weather event. Following initial investigations that identified the source of the failures in both the roof and walls, the project scope included design from preliminary and detailed stages, through to building consent and construction observation. The project’s key objectives were to improve durability, performance, and usability, while responding to the challenges of a coastal site, and maintaining the hall’s role as a vital school and community facility.

Our value add:

Our team provided carefully integrated, end-to-end services, guiding the project through a staged approval process aligned with funding, and programme requirements. A pragmatic, risk‑aware design approach allowed early identification of issues and informed material selection, which included durable cladding and roofing systems suited to severe coastal exposure. The project scope also included upgrading the interior wall linings to improve acoustics, and applying a performance floor covering for various sports played inside the hall.

Clear documentation and coordination across disciplines supported efficient delivery and adaptability, as the scope evolved. The resulting design improves long‑term performance, reduces maintenance demands, and enhances the functionality of the hall.

The now-completed hall provides a resilient, high‑performing community asset that supports diverse activities, fosters local engagement, and delivers lasting value for future generations.
