Efficient asbestos consultancy services accelerate the refurbishment of 50+ schools

The project:

As part of a specialist panel for the Ngā Iti Kahurangi programme - an extensive Ministry of Education initiative entailing the refurbishment of small and remote schools – we provided a broad range of efficient asbestos consultancy services.

Our work included Asbestos Management Surveys, Refurbishment Surveys and Asbestos Management Plans for over 50 schools, successfully facilitating critical refurbishment works to proceed.

With travel to remote and isolated schools being imperative to the programme, our team ensured effective time management and thorough planning that considered the staff and students’ wellbeing as a primary focus.

As such, we designed survey strategies that best utilised time on site, capturing relevant information during school hours and undertaking intrusive sampling work after hours, minimising disruption to classroom activity and mitigating risk.

For more complex sites, we wrote remediation scope of works documents and reviewed the contractor’s Asbestos Removal Control Plans (ARCP) to ensure compliance, risk mitigation and efficiency.

During each schools’ removal process, Maynard Marks acted as the Licensed Asbestos Assessor, carrying out clearance inspections for both Class A (friable) and Class B (non-friable) removal, ensuring the classrooms were safe for reoccupation.

Thorough planning, along with the control of risk, led by dedicated Licensed Asbestos Assessors fostered an efficient project programme, often enabling refurbishment work to proceed earlier than expected. Subsequently, staff and students were able to return to a safe renovated environment without delay.
