Supporting a swift cyclone recovery with digital twin innovation and expert insights.

Hawke's Bay

Return to all projects

Cyclone Gabrielle struck Hawke’s Bay in February 2023 causing significant destruction. Our team was appointed the pivotal role of recording the condition of damaged buildings, along with providing our expert opinion to support remediation and reinstatement works.

The project:

Engaged by our loss adjuster client, the scope of service involved digital capture across various sites in the region to provide accurate high-definition 3D models: digital twins, to reflect the point-in-time condition of premises to inform insurance flood loss assessments.

As a result of our large-scale insurance claim experience and expertise, we were also directly appointed by an insurance firm as Independent Experts, reviewing claim documentation and undertaking site surveys on several properties, providing an independent technical opinion of the necessary reinstatement requirements.

Our value add:

Drawing upon our expertise in building pathology and innovative digital twin services, we were able to rapidly mobilise our team for this time-critical work.

The digital twins we developed enabled loss adjusters - including those based overseas -  to perform their tasks without needing to be physically present. The digital twins facilitated the creation of precise floor plans, which were instrumental for quantity surveyors in estimating reinstatement costs. This approach also allowed for virtual revisits to specific locations, enhancing accuracy, reducing errors, and addressing potential resolution challenges effectively.

Our extensive experience acting as Independent Experts and the critical information we provided assisted in the resolution of complex claim disputes, helping to confirm the cause and extent of property damage and the appropriate repair scope and costs.

Ultimately, our team demonstrated resilience and adaptability while working in flooded Hawke’s Bay, navigating changing schedules due to access restrictions and limited communication, with large parts of the region disconnected.

We were able to support our clients in settling claims quickly during this challenging period, reducing the risk of formal disputes and allowing for timely clean-up and reinstatement works, contributing to the region’s recovery.
