Charles Johnston

Charles is a building surveyor with a strong architectural background and over 20 years’ experience in leading property development teams in the fast-paced residential and retail sectors. Prior to returning to New Zealand, Charles’ career has seen him work extensively in the UK and the far East.

Charles attained his qualifications at the University of Bath, England and started his career providing Design and Planning consultation services in Bath, the Unesco World heritage city, with a focus on projects involving historic buildings and sites that recognise heritage sensitivities.

His career then expanded from architecture to provide Surveying, Design and Planning consultancy services for large UK House builders on a mixture of new build and refurbishment sites across South England, providing insight into how successful property developers operate and the importance of commercial awareness. Charles career has diversified into the retail construction sector where he has developed skills in carrying out property inspections, building condition surveys to document building work requirements, contract work monitoring and handover inspections. Charles has worked extensively on the client-side for large multi-national corporates and has acquired full building life cycle experience in the development and delivery of new and refurbished properties. His experience extends to budgeting and contract administration and he has managed facilities management building and compliance works across large property estates comprising a broad range of building types.

At Maynard Marks, Charles is involved in the full range of building surveying services from condition surveys, due diligence surveys, bulk and location studies, insurance assessment and reinstatement and weathertightness investigation/defect diagnosis through to maintenance planning and development monitoring.

Charles has a specific interest and specialism in feasibility and pre-construction due diligence and understands the importance of early involvement in the property development process to add project value by helping reduce cost and drive a better result for the client and building end user.

Charles has advised clients on the repair and renovation of Historic and Listed domestic properties and enjoys working on architecturally significant properties demanding sensitivity, meticulous planning, and attention to detail. As a Building surveyor he enjoys getting out into the built environment, evaluating construction techniques, and researching different approaches to building development.
